WEEK 4 - Persuasive Posters
Images 16-20
Materiaal:
Digital drawing

Process:
First I started with a soft gradient in the backfround of yellow and daek blue. This allowed be a foundation that i could then use a textured brush tool to add interest in the sand and water. I then drew the sandcastle and hands and finally, added in text on illustrator.

Reflection:
This poster targets parents of young children and encourages both parents and their children to not litter and keep the beach clean. There is a very aesthetic element to the poster that is both sophisticated and playful, catching the initial intrest of the viewers. It makes parents question what their children are playing with at the beach and how somewhere very beautiful can easily be contaminated and destroyed. There is visual symbolism seen in the image with the sand castle appearing like it may fall over and the dark waters approaching in the background. This creates awareness and foreshadows the future of the enjoyable environment becoming dark and destroyed if no action is taken. I originally created this work in guache paints however the colors weren't as appealing and the texture was too smooth. I changed to a digital medium as it allowed me to impliment many textures whilst keeping the colours extremely vibrant and eyecatching. The colors of the rubbish on the sandcastle are dull and brown with hints of bright orange that symbolises consumer culture and they are placed in the center of the foreground to directly address the issue; that there will be more litter than seashells at the beach.
Reflection:
These were the thumbnail sketches that I created for the initial ideation of the poster. I decided on the third image as is strongest compositionally, applies directly to the target audience and tells a story. All three concepts highlight the impacts of litter in both the hygene and safety of children playing at the beach, as well as commentling on how the beach will no longer be beautiful if it is contaminated.
Materials:
- Scrap paper
- Small rubbish scraps
- Guache
- Glue stick
- Salt

Process:
I started by painting some scrap paper yellow and blue and flesh-toned with guache, making sure to add a small amount of salt to the blue paper. I then tore the paper and glued it to the background forming the sand and ocean. Next, I cut out the hands and sandcastle, and then finally I glued on the rubbish. This includes the tissue for the sea foam, as well as smaller bits of trash that represent people's litter.

Reflection:
For the final collage, I used a mixture of traditional and digital media with the text. I used guache over watercolor to paint on white paper as it is more opaque but still has those watery textures. I added salt to to water not only because it added more interest but also because it is fitting for the ocean. The entire piece was made from scrap paper as well as rubbish I had in my bin. Using these materials has two meanings behind it: It not only shows how the beach will be turned into a wasteland but I've also shown the uses of recycling and repurposing rubbish in order to make an artwork, something that parents may encourage their children to do. The collage style has a childlike playfulness to it, therefore catching the eye of parents with young children. It isn't confronting or overwhelming meaning it can be explained to younger children through its storytelling and picture-book-like imagery.
